Abstract: For many decades, middle- and long-distance top-level running competitions have been dominated by East-African athletes, especially by Ethiopians and Kenyans. Various explanations have been provided to try and explain the reasons of such a sporting superiority. They serve as the background for this current research project, whose final purpose is to suggest an alternative way of explanation, based on a social sciences approach. Bio: Dr Benoit Gaudin is a sociologist working as assistant-professor in the Dept of Sport Sciences at the Université de Versailles, France. He is currently posted in the Dept of Sport Sciences at the Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, where he is conducting a research project on East-African Athletics.
