Observatoire de l’Afrique de l’Est: Somalia Elections
L’Observatoire de l’Afrique de l’Est latest report is now available. L’observatoire de l’Afrique de l’Est is a research project coordinated by the Centre d’Etude et de Documentation Economique, Juridique et Sociale (CEDEJ), Khartoum and the Centre de Recherches Internationales, Sciences Po Paris. The project is supported by a network of partners including Institut Français des Relations Internationales, Centre Francais des Etudes Ethiopiennes(CFEE), Institut Français de Recherche en Afrique – Nairobi (IFRA), Centre de Strategie du Bassin d’Arcachon (CSBA), LAM-Sciences Po Bordeaux, and CEDEJ-Cairo.
The publication, Une Election Somalienne, gives an analysis of the recently concluded election in Somalia, the main challenges faced and how corruption played a major role. The elections allowed to renew the Parliament, establish an upper house and choose a new President. In the Observatoire, it is posited that Somali politics is going to be more factionalized, especially at a time the federal states and the national government need to agree on fundamental issues such as wealth sharing and the building of a national Army.
