Call for Applications: Practice Based Video Training for Scientists

The French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA), the Resilience in East African Landscape (REAL), a Marie Curie Initial Training Network Project and the French Embassy, will organise a training session on how to produce scientific movies. In collaboration with the Africa Digital Media Institute in Nairobi, we offer to students, researchers and professionals a practice based video training dedicated to editing and post-production. This training is scheduled to take place from 8 to 13 May 2017 at the creative media and technology training institute. Under the supervision of an experienced professional team including researchers, video and sounds engineers and technicians, trainees will have a great opportunity to realize their individual movies on their specific topics. The training will provide theoretical courses, practice, advice and logistics (computer, software and audio tools) to each student involve in the training. We expect that trainees will have finalized their movie projects of 10 to 15 minutes as a deliverable within one week. The realized movies will be presented to a wide audience during a workshop that we will organize at the Alliance Française.


In 2015, the first group of students was trained for a week in the first steps of making a movie. This was done through a training session dedicated to production and logistics, pitching and directing, and where the students applied their own scientific approaches to film work. For this session, we offer to a group of 15 students from different parts of the world, training on Video Editing and the opportunity to realize a movie in accordance with their research topics.


The objective of this training is to allow the students to create and edit a scientific documentary based both on a research conducted and on the audio-visual material (footage) produced by each of them. The training will focus on post-production, i.e. planning the editing, mastering (visual rewriting of the scenario and mastering of technical tools (Adobe premiere).


The core of this training program is oriented toward: all the technical issues surrounding the editing and distribution of visual image to a professional level, under the limitation of time, how to make powerful, engaging and technically professional film narrative, how to think about the fundamental question of ‘why’ we make films, how to think creatively about questions of form i.e allowing to give new shape to the realities that the film research brings into being and mastering the technical skills in using a professional editing program. Based on theoretical courses, individual practice and collective workshops, trainees will have to “pitch” their film and writing a grounded and persuasive analysis of their film material.

The participants will be trained in:

  • Editing (Transcription, paper editing, batch capture digitization/transfer, browser administration, sub clip creation, storyboarding, and timeline assembly).
  • Rough Cutting (Narrative structuring, synchronicity, continuity editing, cutaway insertion, transitions, effects, motion controls, key framing, subtitling, sound balancing, laying rough commentary, music and FX tracks).
  • Fine Cutting (Film pacing, final commentary recording and laying, colour balancing and correction, foley (reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to film in post-production to enhance audio quality), audio mixing. Captions, subtitles, credits and titles).
  • Outputting – from Codec to Festival (Rendering, exporting, encoding, saving image, DVD burning and authoring, reaching an audience, distribution.

Application requirements/eligibility

  • Profile of the applicants: young students (masters, PhD, postdoc) using video in their research, researchers, journalists specialised in scientific reporting or involved in topics relevant to humanities.
  • Applicants must send the following:

  2. b) An individual movie project in relation to your specific research. The project will include a scenario and a script of the expected movie, a description of the rushes material available (footage, sound, etc.), and the duration of the movie. Clarity of the project and feasibility is a criterion in the selection process (see proposal form).
  • Applicants will use their own audio-visual material (footage).
